New order

My friend Emma has just taken on a quarter plot so we pitched in to give a hand clearing the ground. Luckily the land wasn't too overgrown but just in need of a bit of weeding. Pulled out a barrow load of grass roots and mare's tail while plans were made for growing onions, potatoes, peas and beans. Happy gardening Emma!

Mares tails are a real pain on my plot - the roots are so deep and if you hoe one 4 more come up in its place. So how I laughed when I read a herb book that was extoling their virtues and making suggestions how to plant them! They've got to be mad.

Cleve West in today's Independent magazine was making similiar suggestions about planting up this weed. Having spent two hours this afternoon digging it out of the onion bed I can't share his enthusiasm. I may have rooted out a few spikes today but they are bound to be back in multiples in a week's time...
